Good and Cheap: Eat Well on Four Dollars a Day

By Lauren Phillips-Jackson | August 11, 2019

In 2015 Leanne Brown, a self described “avid home chef,” published a book on how to eat well on a tight budget. The book was originally conceived as a capstone project for her MA in Food Studies at New York University, but when Brown posted a free PDF of the cookbook on her website, it went viral within weeks. The result is her gorgeous cookbook entitled Good and Cheap, which is filled with endlessly creative recipes and tips for every meal, and is designed particularly for those on SNAP and Food Stamp benefits.

The book was an immediate success, and realizing its potential, Brown spearheaded a project that gives away one cookbook for every copy sold to ensure that everyone can access delicious and affordable recipes (and over 70,000 print copies have been donated to date). The book is also available as a free PDF to download in English and Spanish, ensuring that almost anyone who needs creative ideas for how to cook within their budget can have access to this book.

Good and Cheap has been downloaded over 1 million times and both Brown and the book have won numerous awards. A New York Times Best Seller and featured in Forbes, this book is a wonderful resource for anyone.
